Description of the retreat

A Two Week Retreat held and facilitated by 3 very experienced and sensitive teachers- John & Julia Scott. With Co teacher Sandra Howling

Through the techniques of the counted method of ashtanga vinyasa yoga, this two week retreat is an opportunity to come together, reconnect to self and others, to rise up out of the current narrative and transcend the bonds of outside control. Transcendental Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga empowers the individual within the collective to reclaim ones own sovereignty realising our purpose here on this Earth, to our reconnection to Mother Nature and our natural selves.

The YIS retreat centre is located in Zollino, in the heart of the Salento. Twenty minutes from both coasts and from cultural centres such as Lecce, Otranto and Gallipoli.

New Zealander by birth, John originally studied Industrial Design both in New Zealand and Australia to graduate with a Batchelor of Applied Science in Industrial Design.

John is a dedicated and direct student of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois since 1989. John was introduced to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga by Derek Island 22 years ago, while traveling through Europe. Two years later John began his studies with Guruji – Shri K Pattabhi Jois of Mysore India, and since then has continued to grow in the practice and share the practice with many other students on the path of yoga.

In 1993 John was certified to teach Ashtanga Yoga by Shri K Pattabhi Jois. John incorporates design philosophies with yoga philosophies adding a very precise, detailed and colourful metaphorical presentation to his teaching.

John’s teaching is very metaphorical, analytical, technical and often humorous, his teaching style appeals to students of many backgrounds and nationalities, teaching workshops throughout the world. John remains an avid student of yoga and relationship fascinated by the linking of different traditions and cultures through symbols, language and the Counted Method of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

John has been a pioneer in the yoga world traveling many times to Mysore. John is the most influential ashtanga vinyasa yoga teacher and his teaching reputation is world-wide, presenting workshops internationally for the past 15 years. John has produced a best-selling book, “Ashtanga Yoga”, and a counted primary series DVD, and is currently writing a series of books based on his personal experience of this practice (suitable for all levels of practitioner).

John is also known for his illustrations/charts (line drawings) of Ashtanga Yoga Primary and Intermediate and Advanced Series, which continue to circulate Worldwide, having been published in chart form and then later in book form in “Astanga Yoga”, by Lino Miele.
