Ashtanga Yoga Retreat

Description of the retreat

As spiritual practitioners, to dedicate some time, specifically for practice, is a very helpful, if not essential, way of keeping in touch with the essence of practice. On retreat we make time to be still, time to reflect on who we are when we step out of our usual roles, our usual habits; we allow ourselves a safe space to ask questions and perhaps explore different approaches to practice. Our intention is to create an environment where you can be at ease, both feeling supported to turn your attention inwards and and relaxed enough to make new connections with your fellow practitioners. We hope to leave you feeling inspired and with renewed inspiration for practice.

Our approach to teaching is to weave in alignment instruction, to allow you to learn more about connections between postures, understand your body-mind better and find a balance between stability and flexibility, dynamism and passivity. We also hope these insights will help you to practice in a way which is functional and sustainable for the body, allowing for longevity in practice.

With three free afternoons, you will also have a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Salento, make friends, swim in the sea, be looked after by the fantastic chefs, explore the beautiful nearby towns (we love Lecce) and appreciate the friendliness of the locals.


Arrival Day
On Saturday, our arrival day, we will get together for a welcome session from 4pm – 6pm.

Morning Practice
Each morning we will begin at 7:30am with 30 minutes of guided meditation practice, followed by Mysore-style self-practice. This will be six mornings in total from Sunday through to Friday.

Afternoon Workshops
There will be afternoon workshops on three afternoons, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 3pm – 6pm. The workshops will be primarily asana classes with a focus on understanding key alignment points and integrating these into postural practice, there may also be elements of restorative yoga, pranayama and contemplation.

Leaving Day
On Friday there will be a closing session from 11:30am – 13:30pm.

The YIS retreat centre is located in Zollino, in the heart of the Salento. Twenty minutes from both coasts and from cultural centres such as Lecce, Otranto and Gallipoli.

Joey came to yoga in 1998 after a misspent youth pursuing the circus, martial arts and physical theatre. While at Goldsmiths University studying a BA in Drama, he set up and directed the Yoga Society there, doing his practice of seva (service). On graduating he began assisting Hamish Hendry at Astanga Yoga London and for 3 years he practised and assisted daily. During this time, he spent 2-3 months every year in Mysore with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath.

In 2004 he was authorised to teach the primary series by Pattabhi Jois and following that taught daily Mysore classes from 2005-2008 at Triyoga in London. Joey taught on the Triyoga teacher training faculty for 10 years alongside Anna Ashby and Carlos Pomeda. In 2009, whilst his two children were young, Joey relocated to Hebden Bridge and set up Yorkshire’s first 5 day a week Mysore program: Ashtanga Yoga Leeds.

In 2006 Joey began practicing Iyengar Yoga with senior teacher Alaric Newcombe. The attention to alignment, precision and subtle detail has greatly influenced his practice, teaching and perception. Joey has a passion for learning and he continues to deepen his understanding of alignment, attending weekly classes and retreats with senior Iyengar teachers. Christian Pisano has been one of his biggest influences in recent years, whose teaching weaves the philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism into postural practice.

In 2012 Joey received Authorisation Level 2, meaning he has Sharath’s blessing to teach the full Intermediate Series. More recently in 2014, Joey completed the 3rd series under Sharath’s guidance at the KPJAYI in Mysore.
Joey began sitting meditation practice in Nepal as a teenager and has maintained a regular practice for two decades, predominantly practising in the Vipassana tradition.

Grounded and approachable, Joey’s ‘common sense’ approach stems from his deep respect for the practice, combined with experimental knowledge of alignment and anatomy. Joey brings fresh eyes to your practice, giving guidance on how to make the sequence work for you. His pragmatism, humour and caring nature will leave you feeling inspired and deeply connected with your practice.

Rachel had the good fortune to stumble across Ashtanga yoga in 2009, whilst studying French and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham. In 2010 she began practising with Level 2 Authorised teacher Paul Kleesmaa and upon return to Leeds began daily practice with Joey Miles. Later travelling to Mysore, India, on four occasions, to study with Sharath Jois at the KPJAYI, the source of the Ashtanga method.
Rachel has been certified to teach by the British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance, having completed a two-year alignment-focused Hatha Yoga training with Joey Miles and Anna Asbhy at TriYoga London. She was trained as an assistant by Joey and assisted his morning Mysore class for three years prior to teaching Mysore classes both in Leeds and near Hebden Bridge. They now teach the Leeds Mysore programme together.
Rachel began practising meditation in 2010, initially learning the practices of mindfulness of breathing and metta bhavana from a book and soon after beginning Vipassana meditation (in the style of S.N. Goenka). Since 2011 she has completed a silent meditation course annually and continued to maintain a daily meditation practice.

Since her first yoga class, Rachel became aware of the powerful effect of yoga practice on her mental state. She feels an immense gratitude for this life-changing practice and privileged to be able to share it with others. Her intention is to teach with warmth, clarity and an open heart.
